NTI Work for 2019-20

NTI Work for 2019-20 If school is cancelled and an NTI (Non-Traditional Instruction) day is declared, students are expected to complete and turn in NTI work within three days of returning to class. For ALL of my English classes, students will read their Independent Reading book for a minimum of 30 minutes. Students will also log the pages they read on a NTI Reading Log form. This form can be found below and will also be handed out in class. Upon returning to class, students will complete a 1/2 page response to a specific prompt provided during our normal class time. Welcome Back from Fall Break!   I hope everyone had a wonderful fall break! Breaks always seem to go by too fast! Hopefully, all of you are rested and ready to hit the ground running! We only have four days this week since Friday is a staff-only day! Honors English II Before the break, we were studying inference vs. prediction and characterization. This week, we will move on to how to annotate texts. Afterwards, we will go into cinematic analysis. This will continue to build a solid foundation to analyze literature, including the artwork of the first graphic novel we will read: Persepolis .  English IV Seniors will present their Career Research Projects this week! Everyone should be ready to go on Monday! This has been an exciting project and I feel that many students have learned a great deal about their career fields of interest. Week of Sept. 9 Newsletter This week we will be on an alternate schedule for MAP testing. All 9th and 10th graders will participate in MAP testing three times throughout the year (Fall, Winter, and Spring). Below is a copy of the weekly schedule: Monday, Sept. 9th - 9th and 10th Students who have English 1st, 3rd, and 5th hour will test. Morning ECS will return at regular time and will go to the auditorium until the start of 4th hour Afternoon ECS- no change 1st hour: 8:45-10:30 3rd hour: 10:35-12:20 4th hour: 12:25-1:45 (no MAP tests during this hour but reg. 4th to accommodate lunches) 5th hour: 1:50-3:35 Tuesday, Sept. 10th - 9th and 10th Students who have English 2nd, 4th, and 6th hour will test. Week of Sept. 3 Newsletter Our first full week of school has gone by! Students have completed their first performance assessment: a quiz over the behavior expectations in the syllabus. Students may retake the quiz if they did not achieve the score they wanted! English 4 This week, seniors will continue with the poetry unit. We will compare/contrast and analyze various types of poetry. Emphasis will be on stylistic and structural considerations across differing typologies.  Also, if a senior student has not reached benchmarks on their ACT test, they will be required to take the KYOTE test Wednesday morning (Sept. 4). They should receive a note from guidance with more information if they need to take this test. Week of Aug. 26 Newsletter Honors English 2 This week we will start discussing various aspects of our summer reading book The Road as well as the dystopian genre in general. We will also start to examine the importance of words by analyzing tone, mood, diction, denotation, and connotation. Later in the unit, we will apply these skills and more for textual and visual analysis. This will be crucial for our first reading: the graphic novel Persepolis . Also, be sure to turn in the signed page from your syllabus as well as bring your classroom materials!  English 4 This week we will start our poetry unit! We start with poetry in order to learn and start practicing deconstructionist methodologies utilized in interpreting various meanings in literature, as well as practically any other form of art. Welcome to the 2019-20 School Year! I am super excited for school to start this Wednesday! Open house had an incredible turn out allowing me to meet over 60 families! These first few days of school will be spent discussing our course syllabus, emergency procedures, and playing a fun game to get to to know a little bit about each other! We will also be on a modified schedule for the first three days to ensure everyone has the appropriate schedule as well as to discuss school-wide policies. NTI Work: Day 6 Below is the day 6 NTI work for both Eng 2 and Eng 4 classes. English 2 will complete the article over the Tiananmen Square Massacre (relating to civil disobedience) and English 4 will complete the article on Stanley Williams (related to gangs). Make sure NTI Day 5 is turned in when we return on Monday! NTI Day 6 will be due by next Thursday!
